Later Life Consultant Psychiatrist, Bury St Edmunds, West Suffolk

 

We are very pleased to be recruiting to a 0.8 WTE Consultant post in Old Age Psychiatry based in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk (part of Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust)

This post comprises 0.5 wte work as an inpatient Consultant based on Abbeygate ward at Wedgwood House, West Suffolk Hospital.

The other 0.3wte of the post will be working with the Memory Assessment Team, based in the community.

Abbeygate ward is a 17 bedded psychiatric ward for older people based at Wedgwood House alongside 2 other inpatient wards for adults of working age.

The ward is split into two wings, one with 10 functional beds and one with 7 organic beds. The prospective applicant would be working alongside Dr Silvia Ferrera who is the other inpatient Consultant for Abbeygate ward.

The Memory Assessment Service is based in the community and provides a diagnostic service for patients referred with memory problems. The memory team includes non-medical prescribers, psychology input, and has consultant input from the 2 community old age psychiatrists.

This job would be ideal either for an established consultant, or someone who has recently finished their training. The successful applicant would be joining an enthusiastic team of Old Age Psychiatrists who are welcoming and supportive. There are currently 2 full time community Old Age Consultant Psychiatrists and one 0.5 wte inpatient Old Age Consultant Psychiatrist within the department. There is also 1 senior trainee, 1 core trainee, 1 VTS trainee and 1 F2 trainee. The successful applicant would be encouraged and supported to take on appropriate supervision of junior colleagues.

The trust has a strong educational reputation with excellent opportunities for teaching and research.

There are close ties to both the University of Cambridge and University of East Anglia (based in Norwich).

There is a very active teaching programme for medical students from the University of Cambridge. In addition research is strongly encouraged within the department and there is a well- established research network within the trust.

In addition there is a local teaching programme for all psychiatry doctors and regular old age psychiatry departmental teaching programme.

The successful candidates would take part in a West Suffolk locality on-call rota, currently approximately 1 in 10.
